How to win a BOATLOAD of books ! [Instructions for the YA Scramble]:
1) Visit a blog.
2) Read the guest post.
3) Identify the PURPLE word.
4) Pick out the 3rd letter from the purple word.
5) Go to the next blog.
6) Repeat #3, #4, and #5 until you visited all 14 sites.
7) At the end, take all 14 of the 3rd letters from the PURPLE words and figure out the message near and dear to our hearts.

I teach high school theater arts and dance. I love my students and find they are a great INSPIRATION for my writing. Additionally, I believe kids that read will grow up to become adults that succeed. I encourage my students (and my children) to read on a regular basis. We have discussions about our favorite books and characters. You can tell a lot about a person by the type of books they read and the characters they identify with.
Even as I am now well into my adult years I find that I enjoy YA books more than any other, particularly those that dabble in fantasy or the paranormal. I suppose it could be attributed to the hopefulness and open minded perspective of youth that has a tendency to decline as we reach our adulthood. Somewhere along the way our dreams get shattered and we become set in our ways. To me this fact means death to creativity and ultimately, boredom. I will strive to remain a kid at heart for the rest of my years.
Selfishly, I also find YA books (both reading and writing them) to be a therapeutic escape from the mundane reality of daily life. I prefer to read about youthful heroes and heroines with supernatural abilities who are just discovering who they are and become filled with hope, ambition and a passion for living. I want to meet magical creatures and visit fantasy worlds rather than what I’ve already experienced in the real world. I can’t wait to see what challenges my favorite characters will be faced with, who or what will stand in their way and where their quests may lead them. Don’t get me wrong, I adore my family and my job but real life can be very stressful even when you love life. In YA books I can escape to other worlds and realities that take my mind off what presently ails me and magically enough, somehow allows me to appreciate and become even more grateful for the world I live in because my hopes and dreams and faith in the world has been rejuvenated.
In summary I will say that my love of the YA genre is an indirect result of my passion for change and the unknown. It is attributed to the “what if” factor, I suppose. What if… you dream? What if… you love? What if… you hope? Maybe you can make your own magic…

I find that the older I get (I’m 26 now) that I read more YA lit than I ever did as a teen…and I appreciate it more. I love the honesty, humor, and realism that Ya lit offers that I can’t really find anywhere else.

Dear Aicha, Diana, and bmwyatt: I feel the same way:) I love escapism & humor in YA too. Of course, as a writer, the need to be emotionally honest is important in every genre of fiction. But there is a certain bond between YA authors and their readers, I think, because the emotions in YA are so raw & important and we learn to awaken to them as a teen. Good luck to you all!

I totally think of books as an escape! My only way out of reality sometimes
I read YA a lot more now than when I was a teen. Also, I think there are a lot more GREAT YA books coming out now than there ever have been, so that helps.
My favorite thing about YA is the fast pace and the future-can-hold-anything outlook!
