EXCERPT

The stench of something rotten filled the air as the man tried to lift his heavy head. Opening his eyes, it took a moment for them to adjust to the strange dull light of a new day. Wincing, he managed to hold his head up just long enough to notice the smell belonged to a rotting corpse to his side. He heaved, but there was nothing left in his stomach. He hadn’t eaten in days.

Weak, cold and hungry, he curled into a ball on the mossy ground and sobbed.

When he no longer had the strength to even do that, he stared up at the sky; the orange and yellow hues entwined in a rainbow effect as far as his eyes could see.

The only sounds that could be heard were his rough breathing combined with the gentle whooshing of the silver trees that surrounded the deep ditch within which he found himself.

A hummingbird appeared from nowhere, hovering above him, flying up and down and around his face. The man tried to focus his eyes upon it but his vision had become blurry.

When the bird came to an abrupt halt almost touching his nose, he realised it wasn’t a bird at all.

A faint giggle erupted from the creature, making him jump.

“No, this can’t be,” he whispered, hoarsely.

The little creature with large blue wings nodded back, “Yes, it can,” she responded, “I can see you are in dire need of help. I will gather my friends and we will return to get you out of here. You will be safe. Do not worry.”

Disappearing out of sight in a flash, the man collapsed once more before he fell into a deep sleep.

Kerry Cohen Dishes Dirty Little Secrets, An Excerpt & More!

Kerry continues to amaze me with her honest, bold and riveting memoirs. It’s simple. You can’t put Kerry’s books down. I fell in love with her writing style when I read Easy. Her books Seeing Ezra and Loose Girl have been runaway hits. Dirty Little Secrets is being released tomorrow and I am happy to have Kerry here on Laurasmagicday to celebrate!

L.A.H.E : What book did you fall in love with as a teenager?

Carson McCuller’s The Heart is a Lonely Hunter. Simply put, it was the first book I’d ever read in which I could deeply identify with the feelings of the protagonist. I found myself inside it. It was when I knew I wanted to do the same for people someday.

L.A.H.E. : What’s one of your favorite scenes from Dirty Little Secrets?

Well, as you know, Dirty Little Secrets isn’t really a story – rather, a series of girls’ stories. I think one of the more moving scenes for me is about the young woman who was raped during Hurricane Katrina. I often think of her.

Facebook Fiction : Mark Dendy & Laura Wagenschutz authors of Single Shot, a romance novel

Laura Wagenschutz and Mark Dendy have never met in person. They wrote Single Shot after meeting on Facebook and wrote the novel by emailing and texting. I guess they are the When-Harry-Met-Sally version of romance writers, if Harry and Sally had FB and decided to keep all the romance in their fiction. I am interested in their process and happy they decided to swing by. Laura and Mark will meet face-to-face for the first time in Northern California on August 12. More on their tour at the end of the post!

There’s a great urban fantasy novella out there in the ebook world and I’m excited that its author Sohie Nicholls is here today to dish all things RUBY SLIPPERS! What girl doesn’t want to wear a pair of ruby slippers? Sophie Nicholls is an award-winning poet. Her full-length novel, THE DRESS, will be released in 2011.

L.A.H.E. : What was the first book you fell in love with?

S.N. : Probably Jane Eyre. I live not far from the ‘wuthering’ Yorkshire Moors and I devoured everything by the Bronte sisters. For a while, I kept a diary in italic handwriting and wrote as if I were Charlotte. Oh, yes. I think I must have been a rather intense child.

I am thrilled to have Alicia McCalla on Laurasmagicday today. Alicia, a fellow YA INDIE CARNIVAL buddy,  writes for both young adults and adults with her brand of multicultural urban fantasy, futurism, paranormal, romance, and horror. Alicia works as a media specialist or school librarian  in a metro Atlanta school system and enjoys spending time with her husband and son. L.A.H.E. : What was the first book you fell in love with?

A.M. : OMG! This is the hardest question ever. I’m a librarian and a total bibliophile. I probably fell in love with the first book I ever read. Recently, I’ve been devouring books by Leanna Renee Hieber. I’ve absolutely have fallen  in love with her gas light fantasy novels. She is a wonderful storyteller and I love her Strangely Beautiful series.

I’m thrilled to have Abbi Glines, author of the best-selling young adult romance BREATHE here at Laurasmagicday! Abbi also has another book coming soon called EXISTENCE. Abbi can be found hanging out with rockstars, taking out her yacht on weekends for a party cruise, sky diving, or surfing in Maui. Okay maybe she needs to keep her imagination focused on her writing only. In the real world, Abbi can be found hauling kids (several who seem to show up that don’t belong to her) to all their social events, hiding under the covers with her MacBook in hopes her husband won’t catch her watching Buffy on Netflix again, and sneaking off to Barnes and Noble to spend hours lost in the yummy goodness of books.

L.A.H.E. : What was the first book you fell in love with?

A.G. : Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen is the first book I can remember reading over and over again. That is if we aren’t counting childhood. In that case it would be Curious George Goes to the Hospital by Margret and H.A. Rey

L.A.H.E. : What’s your favorite scene from your book?

A.G. : Jax gives Sadie a lift home from work and she needs to stop by the grocery store. Jax goes inside with her, incognito of course, and is recognized by a little girl. I may have written it but I do believe I fell in love with Jax in this scene.
